Amazon FBA vs 3PL Fulfilment: A Practical Guide for UK Sellers

Amazon FBA vs 3PL Fulfilment: A Practical Guide for UK Sellers

Amazon FBA is Amazon’s fulfilment service, while an independent 3PL provides logistics services under a separate agreement with your business. UK sellers can choose either model or combine them, depending on channels, products, branding needs and costs.

The decision is not always either-or. A brand may use FBA for Amazon sales and an independent warehouse for website orders, business customers or stock preparation. Compare the complete workflow before moving inventory.

What does FBA do?

With Fulfilment by Amazon, sellers send eligible stock into Amazon’s network and Amazon handles fulfilment for those products, including shipping and relevant customer-service and returns activities. Eligibility, fees and preparation requirements depend on the programme and product.

Use Amazon’s official UK FBA information and your current Seller Central requirements when evaluating the service. Avoid basing a decision on an old fee table or a general preparation checklist.

What does an independent 3PL do?

A 3PL receives and stores stock, then carries out the picking, packing, shipping and other services you agree. Its suitability depends on its facilities, integrations, handling processes and carrier options.

It can be useful for coordinating direct-to-consumer and business orders, or handling specific packaging and preparation requirements. These capabilities vary between providers, so check your exact workflow rather than assuming every 3PL supports it.

Compare the operational fit

Question FBA consideration Independent 3PL consideration
Which orders? Strong connection with Amazon selling; separate multi-channel options exist Supported channels depend on the provider and integration
Packaging control? Works within programme rules and available options Custom packing may be agreed and priced
Stock preparation? Inventory must meet current Amazon requirements Preparation may be offered as a separate service
Costs? Review current product-specific fees and storage charges Model the full quoted receiving, storage, handling and shipping cost
Service management? Uses Amazon’s programme processes Defined by the provider’s agreement and escalation process

Amazon also offers Multi-Channel Fulfilment for off-Amazon orders. That means selling through several channels does not, by itself, settle the choice. Assess the available programme against an independent provider using your requirements.

When might FBA suit your business?

FBA may suit products for which Amazon is an important sales channel and the programme’s handling and fee structure fit the product economics. Model each product group separately: packed size, weight, sales velocity and stock holding can change the result.

Keep replenishment planning under your control. Sending stock to a fulfilment network does not remove the need to forecast demand, maintain product information and review inventory performance.

When might a 3PL suit your business?

An independent partner may suit a brand that needs one agreed operation for several channels, retailer-specific instructions or branded packing. It may also be useful for holding stock before onward marketplace replenishment.

Check whether proposed services actually cover your needs, including any complex bundles, unusual sizes or product restrictions. Ask for a demonstration of how your order types would move through the warehouse.

How a combined model can work

A retailer might send supplier deliveries to an independent warehouse, allocate some stock to website orders and prepare other units for Amazon replenishment. This separates the physical tasks while keeping the allocation decisions with the retailer.

The added handling and transfers must justify themselves. Include receiving, preparation, onward freight and reconciliation in the cost model. Document who creates shipment instructions and how stock in transit is recorded.

EMFH offers Amazon FBA preparation. Confirm the specific prep, labelling and shipment requirements for your products before arranging an inbound delivery.

Build a fair comparison

  1. Group products by dimensions, weight and handling needs.
  2. Separate Amazon, website and business order volumes.
  3. Estimate average and peak stock holding for each route.
  4. Include all preparation, transfer, storage and return work.
  5. Compare service scope and restrictions beside the total cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is FBA preparation the same as FBA fulfilment?

No. Preparation makes stock ready for sending to Amazon. FBA then handles the applicable fulfilment work within Amazon’s network.

Can I use FBA and a 3PL together?

Yes. Agree the allocation, preparation and transfer process so both locations have reliable stock records.

Does a 3PL automatically provide Prime eligibility?

No. Using a third-party warehouse does not automatically qualify your offers for Prime. Check Amazon’s current programme criteria separately.
